What is Geography?
Geography can be defined as the scientific study of the location of people and activities across Earth, and the reasons for their distribution. The word "geography" has been derived from two Greek words, "geo" meaning earth and "graphy" to write. There is also a lot of history to this subject. The oldest surving map is an astounding 4,000 years old. This map was created by the Babylonians on numerous clay tablets in 2300 B.C.E. There has alose been philosiphers that have helped to devolp this subject. One person who contributed greatly to this field woudl be Artistotle. He helped to present the idea that the earth was a sphere by his observation of the Earth's shadow on the moon during eclipse, and the fact that he helped explain gravity helps too. Another contributor to Geography would be Eratosthenes. Eratosthenes, the father of geography, has done numerous feats to help the advancement of this subject. He helped to calculate the Earth's circumference within a 0.5% accuracy without the technology of today and also determined there would be five climate zones because the earth's shape would allow some parts to be closer to the sun. Even though tons of information to do with geography has already been researched, this subject is still a wide open field for newcomers.
