This article not only describes how Irish dance is a representation of its culture as well as a main part in most Irish legends. Without being too wordy, it sums up the origins of Irish dance and how it has been incorporated in modern culture. Although the dances practiced in this day and age are not the same as the ones performed centuries ago, they are still fundamental to the culture because the dances practiced today show the influences of different cultures on their own. The dances that this article explores is: step dancing (the main focus of the article since it's the most popular dance today), social dancing, and sean-nos dance.
This article helped me to better understand WHY they performed these dances. I never would have guessed that these dances would be a fundamental tool in understanding their history. Although I probably still don't understand it's cultural significance, I now better understand the history behind it. There is, however, a thing this article lacks that upsets me a bit. It has fantastic descriptions of both social dancing and sean-nos dance, but it seems to be lacking on an adequate explanation of what step dancing, the most popular dance is. They go into detail of how it is preserved through the Gaelic League but they fail to explain what traditional step dancing truly is.
This is important to the country because this used to be one of the country's favorite pass times before technology came around. This could have even been described as a regional phenomenon since it is so pop
