Background Since it has first been settled, Ireland has been plagued with invasions from multiple tribes. The first to arrive was the Celtic tribe between 600-150 B.C.E., then invasions by Norsemen followed
late 8th century. The most significant invasion for this country would have to be the one by the English. Beginning in the 12th century, the two cultures have been in a bitter stand off for territory during the course of seven centuries. In 1921, after they continously attacked the British with guirella warfare tatics, they gained their independence from the UK, although the northern part remained British territory. Settlements over Northern Ireland are still in process and being discussed between it's government and the U.K. |
