This article concentrates on the challenges Muslims must face when globalizing the idea of building mosques. Despite their attempts to modernize, as well as neutralize, the appearance and architecture of mosques, they are still facing strong anti-Muslim sediments. This article directly addresses: how architects try to make the mosques appealing for Muslims of all ethnicity the direct opposition they face from European expansion, the problems of gender separation, etc.
I really enjoyed how these "Modern Muslims" wanted to combat their ever going struggle against Islamic critics. It's brave of them to try to spread their religion in a place that seems to express nothing but hatred towards them. However, I don't agree with their gender restrictions at all. I think that is ridiculous how they have to be so separated. Moreover, I also understand I probably only have that ideology toward their practices because I wasn't raised in their culture. I'm sure they can justify their actions in their own way.
This article can closely relate to the country because Afghanistan is a dominant Muslim country. This country and it's culture has obvious close ties with Islam and doesn't try to hide it. I'm sure that as the country modernizes to keep up with the rest of the world they are faced with modernizing their mosques. I am also curious on how Afghanistan responds to the neutralization of architecture and giving women more freedom in mosques since Afghanistan seems to be more of a traditional Muslim country.
